STATISTICS AS A PLATFORM IN EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Our planet needs us to be more caring and loving. As what we are seeing on the left, our planet is sick because of what we had been doing. Pollution in the air, pollution in the water, and pollution in the air are what our mother earth got from us despite the shelter she gave us. But, it’s not too late for us to move. Let us help each other rebuild this home of ours. Through tree planting activities, recycling our wastes, cleaning our surroundings, and proper disposals of garbage, we can surely prolong the life of this fantastic and wonderful world of us. Of course we need the help of everyone, especially the children who will soon own this planet when the old folks are gone. Let us start educating ourselves and let us educate others by doing our part in this mission, or we can call it vocation.

When Koronadal City had its Tree Growing Festival last June 29, 2011, I took time to participate by climbing a steep hill of Brgy. Takilay which is a part of Koronadal City. After 1 hour and 30 minutes of climbing a slope of 30 to 40 degrees, I reached the top and it was a joyful experience to be a part of those who wanted to pay back what our planet had given us, the shelter. As an evidence of our participation to that event, I posted some of our pictures in my face book account and some are included in this blog specifically on the slide shows I put in this blog.
If we will look deeper, it’s not only our forest and mountains that were abused. We can see our streets and dumping sites crowded with non-biodegradable wastes. Don’t we know how to segregate? Or, we are just lazy enough. Are we to wait for nest floods and landslides? Our bodies of water are being abused and damaged. Our air is also suffocated because of smoke and gases form vehicles, factories, and also from our cigars. We can barely take in fresh air as of these days especially in cities and crowded areas. Have you ever take time to breathe lately? Maybe because of our busy lives we even forgot to think that we should breath. If we will not take time and make time to stop what we do and if we will not take time to reflect and think of what is happening around us, we will surely be living in vain and we will just wake up someday knowing that we don’t have any place to live. Maybe we sure have place to stay, but what about our children and those who are next to us. Do we have a place to offer to them? Can we leave this planet worthy to be their shelter? Have we taught them correctly?
Actually, it’s not enough to give them a good shelter. We should also teach them how to maintain the life of this world and to have heart to consider those who are next to them. Using the data provided by the surveys and reports using statistics, we can see that we need to do something. On the left we can see the degrading supply of energy. It follows that we need to conserve energy and we should find ways to have other sources of energy, may it be alternative of not. Our water resources and reservoir must be protected and harness also. We should avoid polluting our water including our air. We know that water evaporates and it combines with gases in air. If these gases are polluted, will have also polluted rain and this rainwater will be the source of the water we are using. Although this falling water is to be strained by our land or soil, but we are not safe for our soil or landforms are also polluted. We, therefore have to protect our land, air, and water resources and help each other in maintaining the cleanliness of our land, air, and water.
To help disseminate the information about saving our planet by educating every resident of this planet, this e-portfolio focuses on statistics as the platform of education for sustainable development. And, I included in those integrations by posting pictures, statistical graphs, and some videos. Below is the video of my band when we had a contest where the theme is about our natural resources. I hope you will learn a lot form this post. God bless everyone!  Seeeyahhhhhh!

MY VIDEOS SHOWING OUR RESPONSIBILITIES
TO OUR PLANET

The video above, powered by www.youtube.com, that features the song of Joey Ayala; is one of my favorite songs. It shows our responsibity towards our environment for the sustainable development and for a brighter future ahead of us. If we will try to look on the data provided for us by surveys and data collected using statistics, we will discover our great role to be educated and to educate about the benefits of technology around us and the importance of keeping our planet healthy. It follows also that in using technology, we should avoid destruction of our natural resources but we should not hinder the progress in our society. Its only a matter of education for sustainability.

Integration of Education for Sustainable Development to Statistics

Taking a rest after the Tree Growing Fest
The advancement in the science and the development of new technologies is inevitable. Brought by miniaturization and automations, our world is busy changing while progressing. Less we know that our world is sick and is tired of abrupt change and surprisingly, we are being asked by nature to pay back. Natural disasters such as typhoons, melting of icecaps, climate changes, floods, and earthquakes are only some of unavoidable phenomena. We can’t avoid those disasters but we can prevent them from coming back.
Although it is not bad to be developed and to progress, but we are just reminded by these disasters to take good care of our planet as we progress as shown by industrialization, commercialization, computerizations and globalization. There is also an issue of poverty brought by so many factors. If we will not continue to educate each other, many will die because of hunger. This is shown by the data in so many studies utilizing statistics and thru technology these data are being disseminated in the internet around the globe.
The advancement in the warfare and ammunition of different countries around the world is another thing that must be considered also in education for sustainable development. According to data provided with the use of statistics, these weapons can destroy us as well as other creatures and living things. If we will not spread the importance of peace and serenity, we will surely destroy this planet with these weapons.
Meaning, it is not enough to be advanced in technology and to be progressive. We should have also what we call a social responsibility. We must help other people to progress and we should not let them die in poverty. We should not allow our co-resident in this planet to die under the exploding nuclear bombs. We could unite to keep peace around this globe. Those people who are poor and severely mistreated by the society must have shelter and food as their basic necessities. If we talk about peace this include the peace within and outside ourselves. I know you cannot have peace if you are seeing others who suffer because of war, oppressions, and poverty.
Using statistics, data about the ill effects of advancements and development are presented and tabulated. Using also statistics, some ways and remedies to address the pre-mentioned problems are also presented. What are lacking are our actions to this issues and concerns. So let us use the data provide for us by using statistics and let us share our lives to everyone by educating them to live sustainably and let’s do our part!

MY REFLECTIONS IN STATISTICS ACCORDING TO MODULE (As discussed by our professor: Ava Clare Marie O. Robles, Ph.D.)

Module 1     Introduction to Educational Statistics
After the discussions on the definition, function, uses, and importance of statistics, I realized that in everything we are doing, wherever we are, and whatever is happening, statistics is always present. For example, there are 100 kilograms of in waste being collected in Koronadal City per day, think of how much garbage is produced by the entire Southern Mindanao per day if Koronadal City is the Sample size of the whole population of the mentioned area. Just think of how this garbage will affect our mother earth. This is just a simple application of statistics on whatever we are doing. To accept it or not, statistics has been a part of our lives ever since the existence or the human kind and it will continue to be with us until the end. Whew!
Module 2     Variables: Subject Matter of Statistics and Research
Learning variables is interesting. I was able to see the interrelatedness of every individual and everything in this world while we are studying variables.  As the lyrics of the song by Joey Ayala say, “ang lahat ng bagay ay magkaugnay, magkaugnay ang lahat,” we are related to anyone and anything in any way. We, people of this planet, should be careful on whatever we are doing especially to our environment for it can affect anyone at anytime and at any place. Simple clogging garbage in the canal in front of your house, if not given attention can cause a flood in your entire place especially during rainy days. We should also take note that whatever is our status in life, we should stay humble and simple, like variables. We know that variables can be classified as we do, but still they are variables and nothing else but variables.
Module 3     Integration of innovation in Statistics
While our professor was discussing about blog, e-portfolio, innovations in higher education, and how these innovations are practiced globally; I felt something is being awaken inside of me. I soon found out that I am really a person of technology and innovations. I realized that I already had a blog since 2004 back then when I was still teaching at Notre Dame Siena School of Marbel.  In my blog, I posted some of my original poems and songs, and some outputs of my students in Physics. This is the reason why I used my account in yahoo mail to make this blog in Education 213 because I already used my Gmail account in making a blog several years ago. I am really glad and thankful to have Prof Ava as our professor, for she cultivated the seed of technology planted in me. And as an evidence of that cultivation, I am now more active in using technology and I am more updated in terms of innovations in education compared to who I am before our class in Educ 213. Thank you so much MA’AM!
Module 4     Measure of Central Location
Besides the knowledge I acquired on measure of central tendency, this module by the inputs given to us by Prof Ava, I was able to manipulate Microsoft Excel in solving problems on measures of central tendency. She taught us to be more literate in terms of using the technology around us. I realized that the technology available around us offers lot of things we can use to be more efficient and more effective in teaching our students and in doing what we do to the fullest. It just passed by in my mind, and I wonder if up to this time, how many teachers out of all the teachers here in the Philippines, still do not know how to use computer. Hmmm...Statistically thinking, I supposed more than fifty percent still do not utilize the benefits of technology in their classes (This is only my own opinion, walang kokontra ha). Hehehe...
Module 5     Measures of Variation
Patience and determination are the values that I acquired from this module. I learned how to take time and make time for my studies after our professor discussed to us the measures of variation. It was a wakeup call to me when we were given lot of equations and concepts to study. I thought it was already a time for me to get serious in my studies and to be focus on what I am doing (palaging  ningas kugon eh). In our lesson, I realized also that each one of us is unique with distinct characteristics and different talents and abilities. So, keep doing good things guys. We are excellent in each specialization we chose.
Module 6     Measures of Correlation
We discussed the degree of relationship of one variable with another variable. In our discussion with Prof Ava, I got an idea that there are things which are directly related to the other while the relationship of other things to each other is somewhat negligible. From my own point of view, either you are directly or you do not have any relationship to other people, you still relate to them in any way. Like you and someone you do not know who live under the same sun and moon in this irreplaceable planet. So, why fight and argue? Make friends guys, for a person who is a stranger to you will be related to you after you have given your sweet smile!
Module 7     The Normal Probability Distribution
From this module, I was able to learn the characteristics of the normal curve. I learned also that the median is always at the center of the plotted data. I learned as that even though we have a normal life, problems and challenges are inevitable. The skewness of the curve in the distribution is similar to the imperfections in our live. Nevertheless, we still have hope for in the words ABNORMAL and IMPERFECT; the words NORMAL and PERFECT are present respectively. Meaning, even though we have an abnormal or imperfect lives, we can still make our lives beautiful and worth living for the way we like our lives to be.
Module 8     Sampling Theories and Hypothesis Testing
To get the correct result/s in you research study, you should start doing the right thing starting from selecting a sample. This is the first thing I learned form this module. Second, the smaller the sample size, the greater is the probability of committing errors in a study. Lastly, errors are inevitable in any study even if we perfectly followed the procedure. But, these errors can be reduced if we will increase the number of samples we are studying, by conducting the study honestly and appropriately, and by having no biases in interpreting the results of the study. In short we are not perfect, but we can still make great things and we can be excellent in whatever we do. Form great quotations and I quote: “Nobody is perfect, but we can do great.”
Module 9     The T-Test, Z-Test, and Chi-Square Test
On this module, I learned how to apply the following test to each data. According to our professor, it is important to know the nature of the data so that we can use the appropriate test in treating our data. Similar to our lives, we should know where and when to put ourselves. We should be aware of the situations we are in and not to do things in the right place and time. The question is, are you in or are you out?
Module 10   Analysis of Variance
ANOVA! Of course I learned lot of things in this module for this was our report. I learned to face my classmates and deliver the concepts of one-way anova with Mrs. Ivy C. Fedoc, my co-reporter. I was able to eliminate(let us say minimize) the huge amount of stage freight in me. Another thing I leaned was to adjust to my classmates varied attitudes especially during reporting for I knew they are also varied individuals like varied data or sets of data that need analysis. Like ANOVA, my classmates should be analyzed and should be understood for each of them is unique. Gets?!!(LOL)
Module 11   Linear and Multiple Regression Analysis
Talking about regression analysis, the most important lesson I learned is to do a research with a much higher degree of difficulty than researches being done by college students. We were challenged by our professor to have a study that will either use this module's concepts or a study which will use ANOVA or regression and not to settle to less by using simple statistical tests. And, I am challenged!
Module 12   Computer Statistical Applications
This is the best part for me. I was able to learn the use of technology specifically the use of Microsoft excel in doing computations in statistics. Also, as the last module, we were happy for we are done with our statistics subject with lot of learning and we were able to do our own blogs(Whew!). We are getting global and maybe universal. He he he...

Electronic Portfolio

An electronic portfolio, also known as an e-portfolio or digital portfolio, is a collection of electronic evidence assembled and managed by a user, usually on the Web. Such electronic evidence may include inputted text, electronic files, images, multimediablog entries, and hyperlinks. E-portfolios are both demonstrations of the user's abilities and platforms for self-expression, and, if they are online, they can be maintained dynamically over time. Some e-portfolio applications permit varying degrees of audience access, so the same portfolio might be used for multiple purposes. An e-portfolio can be seen as a type of learning record that provides actual evidence of achievement. Learning records are closely related to the Learning Plan, an emerging tool that is being used to manage learning by individuals, teams, communities of interest, and organizations. To the extent that a Personal Learning Environment captures and displays a learning record, it also might be understood to be an electronic portfolio. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_portfolio)

To know more about Electronic Portfolio, click on the image or link below.

This E-Portfolio is created mainly to follow, assess and evaluate the professional progress and development in Educ 213(Advanced Educational Statistics) and the development of ICT as incorporated in the subject. This highlights the integrations of Statistics, Education for Sustainable Development, and Innovations in Technology.
This blog offers great emphasis on the collection of data or artifacts as documented to serve  as evidence on the learning acquired from the subject. Furthermore, it also provides published documents on the reaction and/or reflection made out of the learning experiences inside the class.

First Day With Statistics Class

It is an amazing day with my new classmates and with our new innovative mentor. Although we started our class late for it was our professor's first time at NDMU  and her first subject at the NDMU - Graduate School(actually she was lost in finding the university library before the continuation our class in the afternoon(",)), we had a lot of fun. In the morning after the introduction and acquaintances, our professor gave her experiences(I am inspired!) and we were oriented with the subject, statistics, which is considered by many as a difficult subject(lol). After all of those stuff, we discussed our subject's description, its nature, and its uses. We learned also about variables and before the end of the day we are given a topic to report by group. By the way, what I am doing right now is also one of our subject's requirements and its something worth doing for. Why? Because, it is one of the innovations that we should adopt in teaching and learning not only Mathematics subjects but also other subjects and fields of discipline. Before going home, our professor gave our first assignment. And, the most important ting I learned this day is, WHEREVER WE GO AND WHATEVER WE DO, STATISTICS IS ON THE GO!
